Sir David Amess MP

Following the terrible murder of David Amess MP and the Metropolitan Police’s declaration of the attack a terrorist incident, Mike Haines, Director of Global Acts of Unity and the brother of David Haines who was killed by a British Daesh gang in Syria in 2014, said:

“Yesterday’s cowardly attack on an unprotected Member of Parliament was an attack on values we all cherish. Global Acts of Unity condemn any attempt to intimidate our democracy with violence. Whatever the motivations of David Amess MP’s killer it is important people do not allow yesterday’s cruel attack to be used as a source of division and distrust. For 38 years David Amess was a defender of our parliamentary democracy and an active representative of of his constituents’ concerns, the epitome of a public servant.

“With this attack declared a terrorist incident it looks intended to be a challenge to the values we cherish; freedom, democracy, tolerance and understanding. These universal values unite us in opposition to those sowing the seeds of division and hate. Unity is stronger than division.  People should unite in the memory of a man who dedicated his life to serving the people he represented.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very difficult time.”

Mike Haines
